The reading passage and the lecture are both about the population decrease of sea otters. The author of the article mentions two potential causes for such decline.
First assumption made in the text is that the major and more likely cause of the phenomenon is the environmental pollution, while the second culprit might be the attacks by the predator. However, the professor casts doubts on the first claim of the text by considering the orcas as a more highly potential danger for the population of the sea mammals. He asserts that there are not many dead otters found on the shores which proves that they were not killed as a result of environmental factors but were simply eaten by the predators. Moreover, he posits, that the whales, being the main source of food for orcas are becoming fewer because of human hunters. Therefore, the orcas change their diet to an easier findable food such as sea otters.
According to the paragraph the uneven distribution of the animals can be explained by the ocean currents which lead to an unequal pollution over the habitat of otters. However, the professor successfully rebuts this argument by putting forth the idea that that the sea otter population is stable in the rocky areas which are not accessible by the carnivores.
