Integrated writing (TPO 44)
In the reading section, the writer contends that there are several evidence that some archeologists believe that the coin which brought by European explorers known as the Norse to America a thousand years ago is a historical fake including great distance from Norse settlements in Canada, no other coins found in the region, and the Norse who traveled to North America would have understood that silver coins would be useless to them. However, in the lecture, the professor casts doubt on the reading points by presenting some reasons and examples.
First of all, the writer claims that the Native American site in Maine where the coin was discovered is located very far from other sites which documented Norse presence. Conversely, in the lecture, the professor rejects this notion by stating that many other objects were found from the Natives were from far places in North America. Also the Natives of the North America may obtained the coin from far places and brought it back with themselves. It was a really common phenomenon which Native American acquired objects from other places.
Furthermore, contrary to the idea in the reading part suggesting that no other coins have been found at the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the Norse, the lecturer asserts that European explorers were not native to America, and they might return back to Europe and took the coins with them. As a matter of fact, it is completely possible that they brought the coins with them to America, and then took them back to Europe and lost just one.
In addition, even though the writer mentions that the Norse who traveled to North America would have understood that silver coins would most likely be useless to them in America, the professor denotes that although Native American didn't know about the value of money, they valued unusual objects, and they might use the coin as a piece of jewelry, and preserved it as something valuable.
