The reading passage and the lecture are about determining the true use of the Chaco Canyon. The article states three different theories about the actual usage of these ruins. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubts on these thesis made by the writer by saying that his arguments have some problems when compared to some excavation evidences.
First of all, according to the reading because of its format similar to modern apartment buildings, the construction could have been mainly used as residences. However, the lecturer disputes this point by saying that if these buildings were residences, they would have had at least one fire space for each family to be able to complete their primary function: to cook their own meal. Instead of this, only ten fire spaces were found.
Secondly, the reading states that another purpose for these constructions were food storage. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this argument saying that it is unsupported by evidence. He argues that if the Chaco buildings were a grain maize, the later excavations would have found maize containers or even spilled maize on the floor. None was found.
Finally, the reading claims that the structures were used as ceremonial centers because archeologist identifies a large number of broken pots that might have been used for the locals during festive meals. On the other hand, the professor believes that this theory is not well supported since the archeologists also found other material such as sand, stone, and tools. Suggesting that these material could have been remains of a construction site, and the pots, leftovers by meals from the workers.
