The table illustrates the percentage of people who answered for two surveys happened in 1997 and 2006, in which people were asked which communication skills are necessary in their jobs.
Regarding external communication, when comparing between the two surveys, there was a remarkable point that the percentage of respondents asked for “Selling a product or service” decreased 6 percent from 1997 to 2006. Meanwhile, the remaining three elements all had a slight increase in the percentage of votes from 1997 to 2006.
About internal communication (within company), all of six factors, which were considered crucial in communication skills, rose slowly from 1997 to 2006. But two factors “Analysing problems together with others” and “Listening carefully to colleagues” went up from 38 percent to 47 percent in 2006.
In general, the percentage of respondents for both kinds of communications had rose from 1997 to 2006 except “Selling a product or service”. In addition, the most significant element that had a sharp rise in the percentage of respondents was “Listening carefully to colleagues”.
