The three charts illustrate the expenditure in different categories of an UK school in the year 1981, 1991 and 2001.
Overall, teachers’ salaries made up the majority of total school spending over periods of time while the opposite trend was seen in insurance.
In 1991, two fifth of the total expenditure was spent for teachers’ salaries, making it the highest group among the others. The percentage of total school spending in resources is 15% which is the same as the figure for furniture and equipment. The school’s expenditure for insurance was only 2% which is the lowest category in the five groups. The figure for other workers’ wages was 28%, making it nearly two times higher than that of furniture and equipment.
In the following years, the proportion of money spent on teachers’ income increased slightly to 50% in 1991 and decreased steadily to 45% in 2001. The figure for insurance was still the lowest in the next two periods, with 3% and 8%, respectively. The percentage of total spending in furniture and equipment rose slightly to 23% in 2001. This was far higher than the figure for resources at the same time, with only 9%. There was a steady decrease in the percentage of money spent on other workers’ salaries, declining from 22% in 1991 to 15% in 2001.
