Otter

Essay topics:

Otter

The passage states that sea otters have disappeared because of environmental pollutions. However, the professor believes that predators are the real cause of their death.
First of all, the reading claims that the water is full of chemical due to pollution. Therefore, others couldn’t have survived in this condition. On the other hand, the professor thinks that it’s more likely that predators ate them, since no bodies of otters were found on the beaches. This explains why chemicals were not the case here.
Next, According to the reading, the pollution caused other small animals to die out as well. In contrast, the listening points out that there were no bodies of those animals found too. The lecture mentions orca, a predator, that usually feds on whales. Professor says, since whales do not exist anymore, orcas have switched to hunting on smaller mammals. This again shows that those animals haven’t been found due to being eaten by the predators.
Lastly, the passage indicates that otters have disappeared “unevenly”. In other words, they still existed in some locations, but in others-they have completely disappeared. The reading suggests it happened because of the unevenly distributed pollution. The professor casts doubt on this, claiming that orcas simply weren’t able to reach and hunt in some places otters lived. As they are big in size, some locations were too small for them to fit. However, they could still hunt on otters in those locations they could get access to. Thus, the uneven patter happened.

All in all, the reading suggests that sea otters disappeared due to pollutions, while the listening indicates, it happened because of predators.
