The college is a very important part of our lives. It is where we go to acquire knowledge from our professors and it is what create our professional career to the future. Some people would believe that sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support; other would disagree. In my view, I belive that classes and libraries have to be in first place for two important reasons.
The main reason is that nowadays there are more financial aid to athletes when compared with academic merit. The majority of scholarships for undergraduate students are provided to young that can play some type of sport. More focus should be given for people that have financial difficulties or came from a poor background. For example, I have a brazilian friend called Peter. Last year he went to the US to play soccer at the University of Southern California and received a full scholarship, paying all the tuitions, health care and also received a small salary for everyday expenses. Peter told me that it was a very easy process, he was invited to a match where the coach from the university was present. There were three team formed by eleven people each one and he played against the two other teams. In the end of the selection twenty five of thirty three students were selected to receive financial aid. On the other hand, I have another friend from Brazil called John and he is studying at the Stanford University. John won an international championship of math place in Japan and he explained to me that only three students received an offer of financial support. In that way, it is easier to receive some type of support play some sport than being a very smart student. This event clearly demonstrated that classes and libraries should receive equal financial support.
Another reason is that the main objective of colleges and universities is the formation of their students and not the sport. Many people use the infrastructure of a college just to increase their visibility as athletes. A lot of these people barely go to classes and this expense could be used for people that really want to get a good professional formation. For instance, last week, I watched on television a documentary about the University of Michigan. The presenter showed all the buildings, included the stadium. Also, he explained that last year the university spent almost one billion dollar to upgrade their stadium. On the other hand, he showed that the main library was constructed in the 1950s and have never passed with any reform. He presented some interesting data that the stadium's terrain was used by just fifty different students and the library was used by more than ten thousands every year. This documentary taught me classes and libraries should receive more financial aid.
In sum, tough some may belive sports and social activities need to to receive the same money as classes and libraries, on actual days we see that the second ones need more support. Not only there are more money being invested in athletes than students but also the main reason that people go to college is to study and not to play sports. Every college should try to help more their academic students because they have equal or more problems when compared with athletes.
