How geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
The word geothermal can be inferred as the heat from under the ground. Geo means earth and thermal refers to heat energy.
In a geothermal power plant we use water at lower temperatures to flow in injection wells which are basically boreholes of 4.5 km below the earth surface. The purpose of this action is to heat the water to high temperatures using the heat of hot rocks beneath the surface of earth. Such areas under the earth surface are called "geothermal zones" where underground rocks are very hot.
The same water which is sent down through one borehole is pumped up from another of the same length but far away from the first one. This bore hole is called production well. The hot water is pumped up through production well. The water is very hot. In fact, not only do we get hot water but steam also. The steam is then used to turn the turbine blades which is present in the geothermal plant. Hence the name, steam powered turbines.
The turbine is connected to a generator which generates electricity when its rotors move. The rotational motion of generator's rotor is due to turbine itself. So more the steam, more will be the electricity generated.
The steam condenses after it has been used to turn turbine blades. So the condensed steam is cooled down further and then let down through the injection well. Meanwhile, the electricity generated is sent to homes using electricity towers at high voltages.
The same process continues to produce electrical current for general population.
