The graph illustrates the goods transportation capacity in the UK among four different modes of transport: road, water, rail, and pipeline. Units are measured in million tonnes.
Overall, there were three out of four types which had a significant increase in the number of goods transiting in the UK between 1974 and 2002 while only the railway remained the same figure the end of the same period.
Beginning with the highest line, in the UK, the quantities of goods which road vehicles could carry inclined gradually from 1974 to around 1994 by 70 to around 80 million tonnes. Similarly, the least in the capacity of goods transported - pipeline had a steady but massive rise from 5 to more than 20 million tonnes in the same period.
Meanwhile, trains and boats, in the UK, were almost at the same capacity for goods at the beginning of the period (1974). However, from 1978, more and more goods had transited by railway. After the sharp climb ended in 1982, the figure remained at the same level (around 60 million) till 2002; whereas, water-transit goods capacity fluctuated around 30 million tonnes from 1978 to 2002
