Franchise
The passage and the lecture both addresses the question if franchises are a better option than starting an own business. While the passage discusses the advantages of franchises, the lecture refutes this information by explaining the drawbacks related to franchises.
To begin with, the author of the passage discusses how franchising companies already have reliable suppliers with them and protect the owners from incurring losses when compared to new business owners who may select wrong suppliers and end up in losses. But the lecture contradicts this information by saying that the franchise owners are forced to buy goods from specific suppliers which are over priced. They end up paying more money that it would cost for an independent business.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the franchise owners can save a lot of money and get fame on advertising as they are selling a recognized and famous brand and all the advertisements are paid by the parent company. The lecture refutes this by mentioning that the franchise owners only get six percent of the total in sales. Moreover the parent company doesn't advertise the franchise company but its own company as a whole which may have many franchises. As a result the franchise owners get very little benefit.
Finally, the author posits that buying franchises are more secure than an independent business as the chances of failure are less. In contrast, the lecture's position is that even franchise owners are not very secure though its less risky than an independent business. The lecture further explain about a third option to buy an already independent business from a previous owner. This would benefit the owner and he would get twice the success than that of a franchise.
