TPO-17
In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States—birds in particular. Unfortunately for birds, these trends are likely to continue, with the result that the number of birds in the United States will necessarily decline.
The reading and the lecture are both about the decreasing number of birds in the United States. The text claims that this is an effect of the fast growth rate of people in the world, as well as agriculture and pesticides used. The lecture opposes to the state in the reading. She is of the opinion that those are not convincing arguments to explain this phenomenon.
First, the text argues that the natural habitats used by birds are now the new homes for people. The cities are being expanded to allow to new citizens could have their places to live, including all the services associated. For example the construction of malls and offices. On the other hand, the lectures challenged this by explaining that actually, these places have attracted a variety of birds to live there. For instance, peaches and falcons. Moreover, they can provide better and larger habitats.
Secondly, the article mention that it is due to the lands used by agriculture that birds cannot longer stay in their natural environments. The lecture refute this specific argument by explaining that it is incorrect the way the article assume this fact. Nowadays, the agriculture industry is based on a variety of crops, which are changes according the season. Is for this reason that there are not increases use of land. Even though, less land is used now in agriculture.
Third, the reading states that because increasing agriculture now the use of pesticides have arisen as well. This produces a consequently contamination of water and insect eaten by birds. However, the lecture disagrees with this argument. According to the listening, that was a bad behavior from the past that will not persist to the future. Furthermore, science has develop new crops, by genetic modifications that can resist to herbal invasions.
