The line chart gives information on the amount of goods carried in the United Kingdom by
4 different kinds of transport from 1974 and 2002.
Overall, while there was a significant increase in the quantity of products transported on the road, in the water and through pipelines over the 28 year period, the figure for goods carried by trains remained almost stable. The majority of goods were transported on the roads.
The figure for roads was almost 70 million tonnes at the beginning of the period and this value increased gradually to reach about 80 million in 1995. After that, it rose sharply and it was just below 100 million tonnes in 2002. Similarly, goods transported through the pipeline, that was the least common mode of transport, were just below 5 millions in 1974 and kept growing until 1995 remaining stable at over 20 million for the rest of the period.
The amount of food transported by water and on rail was exactly the same between 1974 and 1982 at 40 million tonnes. After that, while the figure for those carried by water increased sharply and then remained almost stable just below 60 except for a slight decline in 1998, goods transported through pipeline decreased modestly to just below 35 million before going back to its initial value.
