The bar chart represents the total number of Japan’s inhabitants from 1950 until now, and projections until 2055, whereas the table illustrates the proportion of people older than 65 within the population in the same period.
Upon analysis of the chart and the table, it is clear that the percentage of elderly people in Japan has increased throughout the period. Moreover, although Japan’s population has risen from 1950 to 2015, it is expected to drop sharply in the next 40 years.
For Japan’s population figures, the period between 1950 and 2005 saw tremendous growth, from 84.1 million people to 127.8 million. The ten years afterwards witnessed a slight decrease in the number of people residing in Japan to just 125.4 million. However, this decrease is expected to sharpen in the next 40 years, with a measly 89.9 million being the figure forecast for 2055.
Regarding the percentage of over-65s within Japan’s populace, in 1950, only one in twenty Japanese were older than 65, but in just 55 years, this ratio has risen to one in five. By 2055, 41 percent of all Japanese people are expected to have surpassed the age of 65. Related to this dramatic rise is a rise in the number of people older than 65, from 4.1 million in 1950, to 25.7 million in 2005, and a forecasted nine-fold increase of 36.5 million in 2055.
