tpo 38 Triassic mass-extinction
The material discusses the possible causes of a mass-extinction at the end of the Triassic period. While the reading looks at the topic from one perspective, the listening challenges certain points outlined in the reading passage.
Firstly, the reading details the points regarding this topic, namely sea-level change. Next, global cooling due to volcanic activity. Finally, the extinction happened because of an asteroid strike the Earth.
Conversely, the lecture challenges the points, one specific contradiction is during the Triassic period sea level went down quite gradually, so habitats adapted to it. In order to have a negative impact on the ocean populations, sea-level fluctuations should happen suddenly. In addition to that, the global cooling that happened because of the volcanic activity happened for short period, because sulfur dioxide was cleared out from the atmosphere quickly, SO2 combined with water vapor and fall as rains. Consequently, the cooling period that happened at the end of the Triassic period was not long enough to cause the mass-extinction. One final point, if there was an asteroid strike during this period, there should be a astroids' crater, however, the only crater had been found dated back to 12 million years ago, which was too long before the mass-extinction.
