TPO 26 Q 1
The passage states the dominance situations of the zebra mussel as a freshwater shellfish native to eastern europe. it explains that spreading the zebra mussels of its habitat to new places, north america coastline, is invasive and would not be stopped.
The invasiveness of these shellfishes makes seriouse problems for freshwater fishe population in the the north of america.
The lecturer casts doubt on the reading reasons for this statements.
First, the reading posits that zebra mussels attachment to the ships' bottom would help them to carry out and spread all over the water during ship travelling from europe to north america; however, the professor explaines that these species would not survived in salty water of oceans and it would be controls their population spreadness by ships' travelling.
Moreover, the passage illustrates the ability of zebra mussels in the new habitats to become dominant species not only for their high reproduction rate but also absence of their predators in their new habitats; controversly, the lecturer posits swich food of the birds' in new habitat of the zebra mussels which makes the birds new predators of the mussels and controls their population.
On the other hand, the text explains the negative impacts on the fish population which are depended on the planktons as the sharing foods with the mussels. Not only would decrease the zebra mussels the fishs' foods (planktons), but also have negative impacts on fishes populations in freshwater; whereas, the professor argues that the zebra mussels, in new habitats, have positive impacts on fish of the sea bottom population which are not rely on plankton as a food and the presence of mussels would rise their populations.
