desertification
The reading passage presents three reasons why the box-shaped device that could be used to allow trees to grow under harsh conditions will not be successful. However, the speaker in the lecture refutes all the claims made in the article. She mentions that all those reasons are not convincing.
First of all, the author in the article claims that one device is needed for each tree. Since countries may have to plant millions of trees, the cost for millions of the devices would be too costly for countries to afford. On the other hand, the lecturer indicates that a single device could be reused up to 20 times, which would save a huge amount of money and would end up less costly than it seems to be.
Second, the article holds that most people living in the areas affected by desertification barely manage to take care of their families and will not be willing to look after trees which does not even provide food for them. In contrast, the lecturer posits that the device not only could be used for trees, but also could be harnessed for growing more plants that people feed on. Consequently, farmers would be able to grow more useful plants besides the trees using the device. In addition, the speaker postulates that branches from the trees would be beneficial for the population as they could be used as firewood.
Lastly, the excerpt argues that the capabilities of the device are limited and once trees outgrow the device, they will not be able to survive the extreme environment of long periods of dry climate without rain. Nevertheless, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea. she assumes that long roots of the mature trees can reach underground for water beneath the dry surface. Also, she states that 90% of trees in Africa are still thriving two years after the devices were removed.
