TPO 26: integrated writing task

The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the spread of zebra mussel in parts of North America and its detrimental consequences. The author describes three problems that have arisen due to the spread of mussels. However, the lecturer believes these problems are solvable and there are ways to control the negative effects of this situation.

First of all, the author mentions that mussels transfer from Europe to the east coast of North America by ballast water of ships and will soon colonize all of North America. However, the lecturer believes that there is an effective way to manage this situation. For instance, ships can empty the ballast water and refill in the ocean. Mussels could not endure salty water of the ocean and soon will die.

Secondly, the reading implies that zebra mussels in new habitat become dominant as they can cope with different conditions. Furthermore, they have no predators, hence they can reproduce easily and their population would increase rapidly. By contrast, the speaker points out that when the population of mussels increases some of the aquatic birds change their feeding habits and feed on these mussels. They can eat a lot of mussel. In this way mussels, the population would not increase anymore.

Finally, the author mentions the point that as zebra mussels feed on planktons, they become a food competitor for other fishes and have negative effects on the overall population of other freshwater fishes. The speaker concedes the negative effect of mussels on the fish population that feeds on planktons but asserts that theses mussels have a positive impact on the population of bottom fishes. Mussels produce nutrients for bottom fishes.
