Cane toad
The passage is mainly about measures that can be taken to prevent rapid spread of can toad in Australia. This amphibian is native to Central and South America but latter introduce to Australia. In the lecture professor states that it can prevent the rapid spread of the frog, but the methods suggested in the passage will not be effective. She provides following facts to prove her claim.
The first method suggested in the paragraph is to build a national fence to prevent moving to unaffected region. The professor argues that this would not work as, young toads and eggs can move to other regions using streams. Since these species are rapidly spreading even few eggs or toads will enough to do a damage.
Second suggestion in the passage is to encourage massive volunteer groups to capture and destroy cane frogs. The lecturer states that this would do more harm as, large groups of uneducated volunteers can mistakenly kill native frogs. This is because it can be difficult to differentiate frogs, especially the young ones.
Third, is to develop and use a disease-causing virus to control cane toad population. In point of view of the professor, this can unbalance the ecosystems globally, especially in Central and South America, where the native lands of the frogs. She explains this could happen because, researches and animal specialist could transport, and virus infected reptiles and amphibian species to those countries. Then cane frogs in those lands can get infected. This is not expected as it will unbalance their native eco-system.
According to above reasonings, she provide facts to why the methods mentioned in the passage could be ineffective and moreover those could create much worse problems.
