TPO10 - decreasing in otter population
The article states that pollution of westren coast of america is probably the main factor endangering and decreasing the number of see otter groups, and provide three reasons for support. however the professor explains that predation theory is now documented to be responsible of the dwindling and refutes each of author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that there are multiple origin of pollution such as oil rigs along alaska coast,as a result samples of water reveal increasing level of chemicals that lead to healthy risk in otters. The professor opposes this point by explain that if this was true so why there isn't any of sea otter noticed dead over sea surface. According to professor the reason why is that predators such as orcas hunt them and eat them, therefore they are not obvious .
Second, the passage says that a variety of other mamalians like whales also declined and so this support a more generalized theory which is pollution. The professor refutes this point by saying that these mammalians were at risk from human hunting activity and a lot of population were hunted, in fact the human are a predators also.
Third, the article explains that there is unequal distribution of the number of sea otter over different location of water territory due uneven percentage of chemicals over these area. however , the professor says that the sites of this inequality are the places where orcas unable to reach them because of its nature which is shallow and rocky.
