TPO 13

The speaker completely refutes the lecture. The speaker uses three points to indicate that fossil collectors have provided many benefits for the public, in opposition to the reading passage claims.

First, although private collectors might not allow the public to view important fossils, the collectors play an important role regarding the cost of fossils. According to the lecturer, when collectors discover new fossils, many people would like to buy these valuable discoveries. This would, in turn, decrease the cost of the fossil and make it easier for educational institutions, which could not afford the high priced fossils in the past, to collect these fossils.

Second, even though fossils buyers are the ones who own the fossils, this does not mean that scientists have no access to important fossils. This is because when new fossils are discovered, they go through an examination process, which is done by scientists. Therefore, scientists will have the chance to access important fossils and discover new life forms.

Finally, it is true that commercial fossil collectors have no experience with how to unearth valuable fossils and might destroy them, but they are the only group of people that could afford and do this job. This is due to the fact that scientists do not have the opportunity to go and discover new fossils. The speaker says that universities and other institutions do not give scientists funds to do this.
