Professor disagrees with the passage which describes Emperor Claudius as one of the greatest emperor of the times. Passage is of the view that there are so many detractors who defamed the emperor instead of his good works. But the professor is not having a similar view due some of the reasons as described below.
As per the professor , he surely did good things like building port and building aqueduct system for pure drinking water. But he was a terrible judge and gives the judgement without even listening to both sides and that’s unfair. In contrast passage supports him by explaining that he does not include high position senators in the decisions that’s why they oppose him.
Another reason suggested by professor is that, he surely did good things to slaves and free them from slavery. He used these slaves as his personal helpers as they are more loyal to him but they are more notorious for being corrupted. Slaves are subjected to bribary very easily. One of the biggest example of his bad judgement was giving reign to emperor Neero , who was the worst emperor of the history in Roman rulers. In contrast passage says that slaves are more trustworthy as compared to other courtiers but the professor negates the thought by giving the fact that he was being killed by poisionous mushroom given by his last wife , who is the most trustworthy.
Concluding the discussion, Professor explains that inspite of the good works did by emperor Claudius , he did great mistakes , was weak leader and a bad judge and not be considered as one of the greatest emperor of roman empire
