The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.
The pie chart gives information about the reasons for the degradation of farming land worldwide while the table illustrates the percentage of land degradation in three regions in the world due to these factors during the 1900s.
Overall, from the pie chart, over-gazing is the leading cause of the worldwide farmland deterioration. According to the table date, the highest percentage of total land degraded among three regions was possessed by Europe.
In the world, the predominant reason for land degradation was over-gazing, accounted for 35%, followed by over-cultivation (28%), while the third position in the pie chart went to deforestation at the proportion of 30%. All minor reasons, known as “other” sector, occupied 7%, being much less than other factors mentioned.
From the table data, strikingly, over-cultivation had no impact in Oceania, while the highest percentage of agriculture land (11.3%) in there becoming less productive was due to over-gazing. Meanwhile, the opposite was true for North America with the figure for the former factor accounting for 3.3%. While deforestation sector contributed the smallest percentage (0.2%) as compared with other reasons in North America, it was the leading cause that led Europe to face to the land degradation problem with 23% of total land degraded.
