Essay topics:

The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

The line graph compares and predicts the percentage of elderly people aged 65 and over in Japan, Sweden, and the USA countries from three different continents from 1940 to 2040.

Overall, it can be seen that, despite some fluctuations, over the period as a whole the rate of aged people has been rising in all three countries. While the number of the elderly in Japan was initially at the lowest level in 1940 compared to the two other countries, it is predicted that this figure will surpass them by 2040.

In 1940, while the highest rate of the aged population belonged to the USA at 9%, followed by Sweden at 7%, Japan enjoyed the lowest percentage of the elderly at 5%.

The USA and Sweden experienced the same pattern of the growth of aged people between the 1940s and the 1990s, ending up with the reversed pattern in the year 2000 when the number of the Sweden elderly increased significantly, reaching 20% in 2018 while this remained constant at 14% for the USA. By contrast, in Japan, after falling slightly to 3% in 1960, the percentage of the aged people leveled off at the same rate until 1988, and then it saw a gradual increase, reaching 8% in 2019.
