The yellow cedar a tree species that is common in northwestern North America has been declining since 1880. Both the professor and passage talks about the reasons for declining. The former was not convinced about the reasons for decline while the lateral emphasizes the explanation of decline.
The first point of the discussion revolves around the decline of trees due to insect parasites called cedar bark beetle. The lecturer cast doubt on this theory. He explains that healthy trees are more resistant to insect, their bark, leaves are saturated which have a poisonous chemical which can kill the insect. So the healthy trees are not affected by insects and those trees are affected which already damage which was going to die anyway. So the insect parasites called cedar bark beetle is not the cause for decline. However, the article claims that insects called cedar bark beetle eat these trees and kills the yellow cedar.
Moreover, another topic of debate is declining is due to the brown bear. Once again the speaker was not agreed about the cause for declining. He says that bears can affect some trees but not all. These trees population is declining all over from northwest and even on the island too, and on the island, there was no bear. So bear could not be the reasons for the decline. On the other hand, the article mention that bears eat these trees as it contains high sugar like berries which is the main diet for them.
Last but not list, we reach the final argument about the change of weather is the cause. The professor says that many trees die even if the temperature is warm so the weather is not the reason for the decline. Nevertheless, the passage highlight that climate change has affected the root system of yellow cedar trees.
