The two pie charts illustrate the percentage of expenditure of seven groups by American inhabitants form the years 1966 to 1996.
Overall, food and car made up the largest percentage of the American expenditure in both 1966 and 1996. Meanwhile, the spending for computers increased considerably after 30 years.
According to the first pie chart, most consumer spending in America fell into the category of food with the percent at 44% in 1966. The proportion of cars spending ranked second at 23%. During the period from 1966 to 1996, both categories experienced a huge change. The percentage of food decreased significantly from 44% to 14% in 1996, whilst the figure for cars consumption doubled by 45% in 1996.
In 1996, the percentage of expenditure on computers rose ten times from 1% to 10% in 1996. Likewise, the percentage of expenses for the restaurant group also had a twofold increase of 14%. In contrast, the spending on books category went down dramatically from 6% to 1%. The figure for petrol and furniture also a short fell to an equal proportion in 1996, at 8%.
