smart cars
The article introduces the topic of smart cars more specifically, the writer discusses the benefits of advanced smart car technology and its possible benefits. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. She believes that the smart car innovations overall will not be ground-breaking, and she casts doubt on the claims made in the article.
First of all, the author begins by stating that smart car technology will prevent many traffic accidents. The writer adds, since those cars will be controlled by the only one operator, the system will eliminate the accidents. The lecturer, however, disagrees. She states that even the most advanced technologies sometimes make mistakes. Moreover, she adds due to the fact that there will be only one main system the number of involvement of cars will be tremendous and this situation might even be resulting in a huge disaster. She continues by stating there will be no guarantee that these cars will make the traffic more peaceful.
Secondly, according to the author, within the smart car advancement, people will spend less time commuting. This is because, the computer-controlled cars will be connected to each other therefore, the highway speeds can be increased, and this means people will spend less time in traffic. On the contrary, the professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s argument. The speaker holds that the number of cars will be increased too, given the history, people will want to experience driving these smart cars and therefore, there will be more cars in the traffic.
Finally, the author mentions that the travel expenses will be reduced since most routes will be direct ones and there will be no need for expenses such as, tire and brake repairs. On the other hand, the professor in the listening passage is doubtful that this is accurate. She claims that the high technology which is used to operate smart cars are quite expensive. She continues by stating that additional tools such as sensors and sophisticated applications to the smart cars will make these cars expensive, therefore, once they broke the cost of repairment will be high as well. The professor says, the expenses even will be higher than the usual car expenses.
