lines found on the dinosaurs fossils are not feathers remanants.
The reading and lecture are about the discussion of lines found on Sinosauropteryx. The author of the reading feels that reluctant lines found on the Sinosauropteryx were not the remains of the feathers. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that the leaving lines are the representation of the feathers and proves in the following essay.
To begin with, line imprints found on dinosaur are mostly formed after the death of animals because when it was buried in volcanic ash, it's skin got decomposed into fibers and the lines are the representation of those fibers but not feathers. However, the professor refutes and states that the fossils are not decomposed instead skin decomposes. Additionally, he mentions that other animals that were buried at the same site found beautifully preserved and they don't see any kind of decomposed structures in them. Thus, this opinion of the critics proves wrong.
Secondly, the writer claims that the remnant lines which are found on fossil structures were of frills. The tutor proves this idea of the writer wrong and claims that the major difference between feathers and frills is a protein called beta- carotene which is found in feathers, not in frills. He also adds the point that specific protein was found in the fossils which tells the lines are the leavings of feathers.
Finally, the reading mentions that lines were mostly located on the backbone and tail of the animal which describes the feathers were non-functional. On the other hand, the lecturer says this with an example of a peacock. he mentions that peacock has long tail and feathers on it because it helps in display behavior such as mating so that it attracts the female peacocks, Similarly, the peacock's feathers were with white and orange colors. This statement strongly supports the idea that dinosaurs used their feathers for display.
