The line graph illustrates the percentage of the population aged 65 and above in the USA, Sweden and Japan since 1940 with predictions until 2040. Overall, the figures for the USA and Sweden population have similar patterns, while the percentage of Japanese was well below and it is predicted to outrace Americans and Swedes in the end of the period.
In 1940, the share of American people aged 65 and over stood at just under 10% and it was the highest figure among the three countries. Swedes from the same age category comprised well under 10% and it was the second high proportion on the graph. By 2000, elder population of both countries increased considerably to around 15% and the population of Sweden exceeded the Americans. In the end of the period the percentage of the USA and Sweden population is expected to be around 25%.
In regards to Japan, the proportion of the people aged 65 and above accounted for approximately 5% and showed moderate decline until 2020. After that, it is set to rise dramatically, outracing remaining countries.
