Overall, China occupied the leading place in terms of population while Japan was in the last place within a period of a century. All countries witnessed a declining tendency in population except India.
According to the diagram, China represented more than a quarter of the world’s population in 1950 and this figure dropped to approximately 18% in 2002. By comparison, the percentage of India went up from 15% to the same level of China in 2002. It is estimated that the figure for India will exceed that of China, reaching 20% in 2050. When it comes to America and Japan, they both present a downward trend in population. To be precise, America constituted 8% of the global population in 1950 and this figure dropped by around 2% in the next decade. It is predicted that America population will remain steady till 2050. Meanwhile, the proportion of Japan declined constantly from 5% to 2.5% in 2002 and it will plummet to its lowest point in 2050.
