Productivity and Rewards
The reading passage states that rewards are directly associated with increased productivity at workplace. However, the listening contradicts with this theory.
First, the reading states that employees work harder with the motivation to get rewards like extra bonus, incentives, paid-vacations or performance-based promotions. However, according to the listening, some employees do not appreciate the rewards system. They prefer getting paid for the work, rather than extra incentives. Employees also feel that their hard work is not getting respected with the rewards system.
Second, the reading states that many books and management consultants prove increased productivity and motivation based on employees’ rewards system. As per this theory, higher the rewards or incentives, more the motivation and results. In contrast, listening passage states that there are no controlled studies to prove the reading argument. Instead, the rewards system may lead to counter-productivity. The employees may feel they are being punished through reward compensation and they feel controlled and manipulated.
Finally, the reading suggests that people like external motivation factors and are perceived positively with a structured incentive system. However, the listening states that this may lead to negative impacts. The employee-manager relationship may get damaged if the work is quantified based on rewards and incentives. The employees may conceal problems and issues from their managers inorder to avoid negative ratings or loosing incentives.
To sum up, according to the reading passage, well-structured rewards are associated with increased productivity and remarkable results in workplace. In contrast, according to the listening passage, rewards not only have a negative impact on the productivity and motivation of employees but also leads to employees and managers damaged relationships within the workplace.
