jet streams

Referring to the points made by the reading, a jet stream is a highspeed flow of air in the middle layer of atmosphere, i.e. troposphere, that is caused by differences between temperature of the earth surface and the troposphere. In north hemisphere, there are mainly to strong stream, one is southern and the other is northern. The professor explains how the jet streams, especially the polar one, influences airlines.

For the beginning, the reading highlights that jet streams flow from one area toward another, based on the temperature differentials. The professor states that the direction of polar stream affect the duration of flights. For example, a headwind flows from New York to Los Angles that results in an almost one-hour longer flight than the opposite direction. Moreover, it leads to higher fuel consumption, as well as bumpier flight, comparing to the return trip from NY to LA.

Moreover, the passage mentions that the two jet streams over North America make two different climate fronts that can cause disturbances, such as tornados and storms. The professor also indicates that the jet streams can mobilize storms and unfavorable weather conditions, which in turn may affect the airline schedules.
