This chart below depicts the proportion of households in two kinds of accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. It can be seen that the number of people choosing to own houses went up through out the whole period, in contrast with people choosing to rent.
At first, the percentage of rented houses nearly hit 80%, about four times higher than the other figure. However, the renting-house trend had been going down until 2004 to approximately 30%. Ten years later, there was a slight increase in the number of people renting houses to about 35%.
On the other hand, the proportion of households in owned accommodation remained unchanged between 1934 to 1453, followed by a gradual rise until it peaked at nearly 70% in total. After that, the mentioned feature ended up with about 65%. In addition, in 1964, the percentage of people owning and renting houses stayed equally at half of total for the one and only time.
To sum up, residents in England and Wales has changed from renting to owning houses for the half end of the period, even though the number of people owning houses could never peak as people renting houses.
