Life on Mars
In this set of materials, the writer postulates about Mars is an ideal planet to live for humans after Earth runs out of resources and provides three reasons to endorse its idea. However, the professor in the listening states that there is no ground to the reasons mentioned in the reading because it is not the reality and gainsays each of them.
First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting the possibility of water on Mars. Through analysis of soil inside both poles through radars, scientists have detected some substances which could be water, an essential element for living. On the other hand, the professor explains that it is not proven yet. Earth is geologically active and warm which is suitable for the presence of water while Mars is relatively cold so the availability of liquid is impossible. Moreover, he states the colored waves scientists received from radars could be a sign of different elements other than water. Hence the presence of water is not certain on Mars until now, the colonization there is impossible.
Next, the speaker further points on the details about the Martian atmosphere which is too harsh for humans to survive. Although microbes can resist an extreme temperature, the bodies of humans are too weak to handle such an environment. In addition, he describes firstly, the atmospheric pressure is below 100, secondly, the temperature is below -7 degrees which will burn the skin of humans when exposed to such a cold climate. These points refute the writer's implication about the possibility of life in the Martian atmosphere because they found the existence of microbes on Mars and the level of ultraviolet radiation Antarctica receives is similar to the rays on Mars.
Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring that in 2012 and 2014, NASA has detected traces of methane gas on Mars which is a valuable source of living for humans. In contrast, the professor ex[plains that there is no evidence about the existence of methane gas on Mars. The experiments are not reliable and the resources used could have malfunctioned. In fact, in 2016 very minute concentration of methanne were found by ETS by using advanced tools on the whole surface of Mars which is not evident enough to support a life.
