The use of social media is replacing face-to-face interaction among people in society. Do you think the advantage outweighs the disadvantage?
In recent times, thanks to the advent of the Internet , people have a preference for interaction via social network sites rather than meeting face-to-face. While many argue that this trend has some positive aspects, I contend that the drawbacks are more significant.
First and foremost, it is apparent that the trend of online meetings is beneficial to some certain extent. The most noticeable point to consider is that the use of social media is of great advantage to people who are scattered across the globe with their families and friends due to their work or study commitments. Various types of online interactions such as online chatting and video calls may help these people keep in touch with their near and dear, as well as stimulate the family bond. Furthermore, as the impacts of COVID-19 epidemic are detrimental, the role of social media becomes vital in connecting citizens in societies. Not only does online interaction prevent people from being isolated with the community during quarantine time but it also helps to decrease the risk of getting infected with the virus owing to face-to-face contact.
Nevertheless, I believe that maintaining contact via social media sites is rather disadvantageous on the whole. Firstly, this may discourage real interaction and prevent people from acquiring and developing social skills. Over-relying on the Internet could prevent users from exposing to the world outside, which could further lead to a serious lack of communication skills as well as some undesirable psychological problems such as anxiety. Moreover, social networks are no longer safe and reliable enough as the number of hackers and cyber crimes is now increasing dramatically . Personal information could be intruded and stolen for illegal purposes, which may pose a threat to users’ private life .
In conclusion it seems to me that there are a number of shortcomings to replace real interactions with online contacting despite some notable benefits. People should take advantage of the pros and minimize the cons of this issue so as to preserve the value of face-to-face meetings but also make use of technology advances.
