The bar chart and table illustrate the trend in Japan's population in a period of 105 years from 1950 to 2055. As can be seen for the given information, the total population of Japan is forcasted to go down over the years with the increasing percentage of senior citizens.
The first 55 years has seen a steady increase in the Japan's population figures from 84.1 millions in 1950 to 127.8 millions in 2005. During this time, the proportion of those who aged over 65 years old also went up from just 4.9% to a quater of the total population.
During the next 10 years, Japan's population started going down to 125.4 millions in 2015, which is then predicted to be followed by the sharp decline to 110 millions in 2035 and a further reduction to just 89.9 millions in 2055. Similarly, the percentage of citizens aged 65 years old and above is also doubling from just 20% in 2005 to 41% in 2055.
