The diagrams show the life circle of a species of large fish called salmon.
The diagrams describe a complete life span of the salmon from birth to adult life.
Overall, salmon’s life cycle consists of main three phases from spawn to adult. It takes approximately 10 years to fulfill a cycle and reproduce new generation.
Initially, eggs hatch and baby salmons are brought to life. These young fishes are called fry of which size fluctuates between 3 and 8 cm. The fry inhabits in lower river where has fast flowing current for about 4 years. Then, fry has transformed into smolt. Size range of smolt is from 12 to 15 cm, almost triples its younger version. At this stage of life, smolt leaves river and immigrate to the open sea. Here, it spends roughly 5 years of lifetime before fully growing to adult. Full size of adult salmon is relatively large, it can be measured more or less than range 70 to 76 cm.
At this point, the critical period in life cycle of salmon begins. Salmon returns to the original place in order to perform reproduction. At upper river where experiences slow moving water, salmon lays eggs on small stones which are covered by reeds. In this spot, the eggs are sheltered from predators and they remain here for about 5 to 6 months. Finally, fry is produced and a new generation will keep repeating the cycle.
