Increasing numbers of students are going to university instead of working after high school. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that more students are having a propensity for attending universities or colleges instead of finding a job immediately after high school. From my perspective, its demerits are overshadowed by its merits.
When students choose to enrol in higher education, one problem which can be anticipated is that students have to allocate more time on studying; as a result, they miss out the opportunities to experience employment at first hand, making them fall behind their peers who start working before them. For example, people who set up a company right after schooling are more liable to overcome difficulties than those who have just graduated from universities as the former ones possess greater practical understanding. What can be inferred from this is that graduates lack the ability to solve real-life problems, which those choosing to work after high school may have mastered.
Despite the aforementioned disadvantage, I am of the opinion that the advantages have a more significant bearing. One of them is that the higher education one receives, the better job opportunities he may be offered, especially in this knowledge-based economy. In other words, employers would recruit somebody with a Master degree rather than one with a Bachelor level, considering that the two’s backgrounds are similar. Another justification worth mentioning is that by obtaining further education, graduates will acquire a firm grasp of their fields as well as a more well-rounded knowledge about their career paths. Therefore, when they put knowledge gained into practice, their productivity will probably rise; consequently, this culminates in a more prepared and excellent workforce, which is the core of economic growth. This directly suggests that people choosing to keep pursuing education develop scholastic competence and characteristics, of which a nation’s economy can reap benefits.
In conclusion, I believe the disadvantages of the trend pale in comparison to any of its advantages.
