The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.
It is clearly evident that the proportion of global prices of both food and oil increased from 2000 to 2011. Overall, there are some striking similarities of the trends for both food and oil prices, and a strong correlation -93,6%- is suggested.
By 2000, the food price index stood at roughly 90 points and the average oil price made up $25 per barrel. During the first 4 years, both prices remained stable, after which the costs registered a slight increase in three years. In 2007, the food price index rose to 140 points, more than 50 points in 2000 and the average oil price increased by $30 per barrel.
2007 witnessed a dramatic growth in the costs of food and oil, the average oil price reached a peak of $130 per barrel and the food price index grew to 230 points. In clear contrast, the costs collapsed quickly at the beginning of 2009, the food prices fell by 80 points and approximately $90 per barrel with the price of oil. However, increasing in both trends were apparent in 2009, while the average oil price rose to $100 per barrel, the food price index reached its highest point just below 240 points.
