The graph below shows the consumption of 3 spreads from 1981 to 2007.
The line graph demonstrates the amount of three kinds of spreads, namely margarine, lowfat and reduced spreads, butter consumed in the 1982-2007 period.
Overall the consumption of margarine and butter fluctuated widely from 19i82 to 300 while lowfat and reduced spreads emerged in 1996, prior to a slight variation in the next 11 years. At the end of the period, the latest spreads were the most popular spread, followed by butter and margarine.
In 1981, the consumption of butter was nearly above 140 grams while that of margarine stood at about 85 grams. In the next five years, the amount of consumed butter rose to the peak of approximately 160 grams, followed by a plunge to only around 45 grams in 2007. A similar trend was seen in margarine consumption, which increased to 100 grams in 1981, before remaining stable for the following five years. From 1996 to 2007, the number of consumers of margarine plummeted to 40 grams.
In 1996, the figure for the people consuming low fat and reduced spreads stood at around 10 grams, then soaring to nearly about 80 grams in 2001. There was a slight decline to 70 grams in the consumption of this spread in the last year of the studied period, making it the most favored choice among the population out of the three types of aforementioned spreads.
