Salton sea's salinity.
Both the reading and lecture discuss about the salinity of Salton Sea which is a salty inland lake. The former argues that the increased level of salinity over the years will make the lake unable to support fish and bird populations. Then, the author suggests three ways to reserve the threatening trend but the lecturer contradicts each of those points.
Firstly, the author asserts that desalination would be a great way to directly remove the salt from lake. However, the lecturer disputes the arguments by explaining that solid materials (such as salt and other dissolved materials in the lake) that would be left behind, pose a serious health issues for people as some chemicals are toxic. Additionally, she points out that, when people breath in these toxic chemicals by change, they will be sick.
Secondly, the author claims that the salt level of lake water could be diluted with the Pacific Ocean water which is 20 percent less salty than the lake water. In contrast, the lecturer contends that constructing pipelines and canals for over 100 km will be expensive for the local government. Moreover, she states that the local government may not bee willing to spend their funds on this costly project.
Finally. the author insists that the lake could be divided into several sections by constructing walls, where salinity of smaller sections would allow to increase and the main and largest section's salinity would be reduced and controlled by directing all fresh water from small rivers. The lecturer, however, contests that constructing walls would be a temporary solution as the region is frequent with geological activities such as earthquack. Furthermore, she notes that the constructed wall would fall and the water from sections would mix back in.
To sum up, the author and the lecturer both hold different view of the topic. It will be difficult to find a common ground for the issue.
