The reading passage gives reasons suggesting that the portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet is not made by Rembrandt. However, the professor in the lecture disagrees with the reasons made in the passage and suggests the following.

Firstly, the passage said that the painting shows inconsistency in the woman’s clothing. She is wearing a simple linen cap of a servant and a luxurious fur collar which is highly unlikely that a servant could afford. The professor opposed this by talking about research to substantiate his opinion. The research conducted an X-ray of the painting which showed that the original painting does not consist of the extravagant fur collar as shown in the portrait and it was added hundred years later by someone else to Rembrandt’s painting to make it more valuable.

Furthermore, the passage mentioned the incongruency in the light and shadow in the portrait and cites that the woman’s face is illuminated by a light reflected on it from below which is highly unlikely as there is a dark-colored fur collar below which absorbs light. The lecturer corrected this reasoning by saying that the fur collar which was painted later on the painting caused this issue and that the original painting of Rembrandt consists of light-colored clothing that reflects the light on the woman’s face.

Lastly, the reading passage mentioned the glued wooden panels which are unlike any of Rembrandt’s works. However, the professor cites that the extra wood pieces were glued to the original wooden panel by someone else to add the fur collar to the painting. Thus, confirming that the portrait is that of Rembrandt. The professor also added that the wood of the original portrait was from the same tree as the wood used by Rembrandt for his other painting - The Self portrait of a hat.
