The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graphs depict the percentage of households possessing electrical appliances from 1920 to 2019 along with the variation in number of hours invested in household works during that period. In general, as the proportion of houses using the electrical appliances increased till the end of the century, the time involved in doing house works decreased.
Specifically, the ownership of all three electrical appliances increased with rapid surge in use of refrigerator than vacuum cleaner and washing machine. Refrigerator usage increased to 100 % within 60 years and continued to its culmination afterwards. The utilization of vacuum cleaner also raised in a linear way from 30 % to 100 % between 1920 and 2000 AD. Similarly, the households also used washing machine displaying a growth from 40 % to around 75 % in the century of the study. However, the increase is not as steep as it is for other two appliances.
Furthermore, the number of hours per week of house works decreased during this time. The reduction was quite rapid between 1920 to 1960 when it came down to 20 hours from 50 hours per week. The time after 1960 saw a gradual reduction to 10 hours per week. The cause of decrease could be credited to the surge of electrical appliances' usage.
In an interesting note, a small decrease of 10 % is seen in the usage of washing machine from 1960 to 1980. However, the decrease in time allocated to chores is not abnormal in this gap. So, it could be inferred that use of washing machine did not have any significant role in the reduction of time invested in house works in comparison to refrigerator and washing machine.
