Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperature constant. for instance, humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37 degree no matter whether the environment is cold or warm, polar dinosaurs, leg position and movement, haversian canals
The reading supports the claim that dinosaurs are endotherms like mammals and modern birds, which means they can maintain their body temperature at 37 degrees regardless the surrounding temperature weather it’s warm or cold. The lecture however strongly refutes the reading for the following reasons.
First, the reading claims that the fossils found in the polar region support that dinosaurs are endotherms because only endotherms could live in temperature above their inner temperature. However, the lecture challenges this by the warmer weather in polar region back in time when dinosaurs existed and mentions that they could have migrated at time where it was colder or hibernated like modern reptiles.
Second, the reading believes that the position of the legs underneath not on sides of their bodies resemble that of endotherms. Because this legs position allows endotherms to run. Meanwhile, the lecture disagrees with this and states that the leg position allows dinosaurs to walk despite of their huge weight. Therefore, the leg position and movement proof are not well founded.
Finally, the reading supports the claim that dinosaurs are endotherms by the presence of haversian canals in their body structure which allows for rapid body growth in endotherms. the lecture refutes this by mentioning that dinosaurs also have growth rings which is characteristic of animals that are not endotherms.
In conclusion, while the reading claims that dinosaurs are endotherms, the lecture proves that all the claims are not valid.
