Students are becoming more and more reliant on the Internet. While the Internet is convenient, it has many negative effects and its use for educational purposes should be restricted.
How far do you agree with this statement?
In today’s modern world, the Internet is more likely to be used widely in a part of the world, especially in the education system. It is a common belief that it is beneficial for teaching and learning due to its convenience. However it is argued that the Internet is negative for students in many aspects. While I accept the Internet should be limited for several reasons, I side with the idea that it is still a valuable tool for pupils.
On the one hand, there are a handful of reasons why the Internet has some negative aspects. First of all, websites on the Internet are very complex. In other words, it could contain information that is not incorrect or not suitable for pupils. So, students need to know how to check the material or evaluate the information they find on the Internet. Secondly, some students simply copy amounts of material for their studies without understanding. In consequence, they will not learn it fully and not deeply understand the lessons.
On the other hand, I am of the opinion that the Internet plays a vital role in school and in everyday life and should not be restricted. Firstly, if students learn how to use the Internet correctly, they can use it for keeping in touch with friends and family or social networking. Secondly, students need the Internet for research in school or university. In other words, they can use the Internet to search for the most up-to-date news or information rather than in books. Last but not least, the covid 19 pandemic has contributed to the use of the Internet for education. In order to continue normal school during lockdowns, students need to use the Internet to pursue their studies such as Zoom or Google Meetings.
To sum up, while it is apparent that the Internet has many disadvantages in school, however, the Internet is a double-edged sword. I believe if teachers and schools teach students how to use the Internet in the right ways, they are more likely to become more dynamic and willing to study in class.
