The charts compare the number of people per household in the UK
in 1981 and 2001
The charts give information about the proportions of six different types of families in the UK during the period from 1981 to 2001.
Overall, there were upward trends in the percentage of one and two-member households while the figures for the other groups experienced a reverse pattern over the given period. It is also clear that the two-member family was considered the most common one in the United Kingdom.
Starting at 17%, the rate of single-person households increased noticeably to 26% in 2001. At the same time, there was a similar trend in terms of families of two people, increasing from 31% to 34%.
In comparison, 20% of British people lived in households which had three members, followed by 18% regarding families of four. Afterwards, the figures for these two groups decreased slightly by 3% in the following 20 years. Similarly, those living in five and six-people households accounted for only 8% and 6% respectively. 20 years later, there was a slight drop of 2% for the former and 4% for the latter.
