The Salton sea in California
There is a salty body of water inland, far away from the Pacific Ocean, in California state. The water in this sea vaporizes faster than rainwater refills it, increasing its salinity. These have raised concerns regarding the well-being of the local fish or birds. The passage proposes three solutions to help restore its salinity, but the professor challenges these measures.
First, the text proposes the construction of desalination facilities. These facilities will vaporize water, leaving toxic materials behind. The evaporated water that is less salty can then be accumulated and returned to the sea. The professor says this process will be more harmful to the local people. According to her, when the salt or the toxic material left behind is mixed with the air, people will breathe it, harming their health.
Second, we can construct pipelines or canals to transfer ocean water to the sea. Since seawater contains less salt, it can help in decreasing the sea’s salinity. The lecturer opposes this idea by suggesting that this measurement is not economically viable. The distance to the ocean is 100 km, and the local government does not have enough resources to construct these facilities.
Third, we can construct walls to separate bodies of water. Freshwater from rainfall can then be allowed to particular bodies, resulting in a salinity decrease. According to the professor, this proposition is unlikely to be helpful in the long run because of the local geological challenges. This area is known for its geological activities, and earthquakes happen regularly. In case of earthquakes, the constructed walls will collapse, and the sea will return to its past state.
