The charts illustrate the percentage of families owning electrical appliances and the number of hours they spent doing housework from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that the ownership of three electrical appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners) increased in that period, while the time each household did housework reduced significantly.
According to the first line graph, refrigerators witnessed the most significant rise, beginning at just 0% in 1920, surging to more than 50% in 1940, and then continued to increase steadily until staying remain at 100% from 1980 to 2019. Vacuum cleaners started higher at 30% in 1920 and then rose by precisely 20% every 20 years until 1980 when growth tapered and ownership ultimately reached 100% between 2000 and 2019. In contrast, the percentage of washing machines began at 40%, climbed to 70% in 1960, then fell slightly in 1980, and recovered to finish the period at above 70%.
Regarding the second chart, in 1920, each family did housework for 50 hours per week, but then the time dropped down gradually to merely more than 10 hours per week in 2000. Finally, in 2019, the time for doing housework decreased to nearly 10 hours per week.
