The pie charts illustrate five different kinds of contaminants entering in one particular area of ocean in two years, namely 1997 and 2007.
In general, there were a noticeable decrease in the proportion of trash, agriculture runoff, and sewage entering in this area, while an upward trend can be seen if we look at the figures for oil and air pollution. It is also clear that the figure for trash was the highest among five types of pollutants in 1997; however, that for oil was larger than for any other in 2007.
At the beginning of the period, 42% of pollutants that entered in this area of the ocean was trash, compared to only 25% of agriculture runoff. Over the following 10 years, this area of ocean saw the percentage of trash drop sharply, to 15%. Furthermore, Agriculture runoff followed a similar trend to that of trash, with figures decreasing to 8%.
In 1997, the proportion of sewage and oil stood at the same level, while the figure for air pollution was lower, at 3% respectively. After 10 years, the percentage of oil entering in one particular area of the ocean rose considerably, reaching a peak of 52%. In addition, the proportion of air pollution entering in this area climbed to 15%; however, that for sewage declined to 8%
