The first flow diagram illustrates the process of chocolate production, and the pie chart describes the percentage distribution of the price of a chocolate bar.
Overall, chocolate can be produced in two forms - one is chocolate bars, and the other is cocoa powder for the food industry. Also, we can see that the cost of ingredients and overheads alone comprised 37% of the price of a chocolate bar.
The first stage of making chocolate involves the grinding of cocoa, which gives cocoa liquor and some waste. Cocoa liquor can be used in two ways. The first way is pressing it to make cocoa powder, which can be sold to the food industry, and cocoa butter, which is used in making industrial chocolate. The second way is turning the cocoa liquor into industrial chocolate, which then becomes a chocolate bar when cocoa butter, sugar, and other ingredients are added.
A glance at the pie chart depicts that 37% of the total price of a chocolate bar goes to cost of ingredients and overheads. Supermarket received a full 34% of the price, and government’s tax is 15%. Only 10% is allocated to chocolate company and farmer gets the lowest proportion - just 4%.
