Easter Island civilization collapse
The lecture challenges the theories about the collapse of Easter Island’s civilization provided by the reading passage.
First, it attacks the rat infestation theory. The lecture states that, while there were rats on the Easter Islands and there is evidence that they did, in fact, eat palm tree seeds, there still was enough food to feed the population. It mentions, that the islanders were prodigious fishers and 60% of their food came from the sea. Moreover, they knew how to build stone gardens to grow crops such as potatoes even on eroded soil.
The second theory that the lecture is refuting is the theory about large-scale warfare. Archeologists found a lot of curved blades on Easter Island, but modern scientists think they are not even weapons: most of them are not sharp or pointed. The scientists suggest that those blades were the instruments used for cutting stones, not for combat.
Finally, the lecture debunks the third theory, the one about civilization's collapse being caused by the diseases brought by visitors from Europe and South America. The lecture states that even though those diseases were detrimental to the island’s population, only 3000 people lived on the islands during the first contact in the 19th century. However, in the 17th century, the estimated population of Easter Island was around 20000 people. This suggests that whatever caused the civilization collapse happened long before the first contact with those visitors.
All things considered, it looks like there should be another theory that explains the collapse of Easter Island’s civilization.
